Students in grade 2 learned about dental hygiene and participated in a dental "eggsperiment" that showed the benefit of using fluoride toothpaste. Eggs were used to represent the enamel of our teeth. Half of the egg was submerged in fluoride. After 4 days, the entire egg was submerged in vinegar which represents the acids in our saliva causing tooth decay. The students got to see and feel how the side that had been protected by the fluoride had a hard shell and was stronger than the non protected softer side. They all decided it was very important to brush for 2 minutes at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. They also learned the importance of avoiding too much sugar in their diet, eating foods high in calcium, going to the dentist, flossing, and wearing mouth guards for sports.
