The third graders at South School are participating in the Massachusetts Public Health sponsored fluoride rinse program. Fluoride has been shown to be a safe, inexpensive and extremely effective in preventing tooth decay. When acid from plaque bacteria begin taking minerals out of the tooth enamel, fluoride can put minerals back in, therefore preventing tooth decay. This type of topical fluoride rinse can prevent tooth decay by 20-40%. Fluoride can also be found in toothpaste, fluoridated community drinking water and other foods or drinks prepared with fluoridated water. The FDA has approved the 0.2% 20 week fluoride rinse program as a safe and effective means of preventing tooth decay. The third grade students rinse their mouths with 10 ml of fluoride for one minute each week and spit it out. During the swish minute, they listen to a health tip.
