Carbon Monoxide Poisoning- The Invisible Killer- Advice from Neighborhood Safety Network and the Consumer Product Safety Commission

We are now at the midpoint of the winter season and there are plenty of cold days left before we start warming up.  Please be aware of the dangers of carbon monoxide.
  1.  Portable generators should NEVER be used INSIDE or in any enclosed space. Keep them 20 feet away from windows, doors, and vents
  2. Never leave your car on in a garage, even if the garage door is open.
  3. Have your heating system professionally inspected every year.
  4. Make sure your fireplace damper is open until all ashes cool.
  5. Place a carbon monoxide detector on every level of your home and outside sleeping areas.
  6. Symptoms of Carbon monoxide poisoning are:  headache, fatigue, nausea and vomiting.   If you notice these symptoms and feel it could be from carbon monoxide poisoning, go outside immediately to get fresh air.  Call 911.
  7. REMEMBER...YOU CAN"T SEE OR SMELL CARBON MONOXIDE

Hickory Dickory Dock...It's time to change your clock...and SMOKE and CO alarm batteries too!!

Here is a reminder that as you turn your clocks back when Daylight Savings Time ends at 2am on Sunday, November 6th, please change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms as well.  It could save your life and the lives of your loved ones.

Some sobering facts:  CPSC estimates more than 300,00 fires, 2,100 deaths, 12,000 injuries, and $6billion in property loss each year from 2011 to 2013.  According to the National Fire Protection Association, roughly 3 out of 5 fire deaths happen in homes with no smoke alarms or where the smoke alarms are not working.

The Epiglottis is a flap of cartilage at the top of the windpipe.  It acts as a gateway, stopping food from entering.  When you swallow, it sends food down the esophogus (food tube) away from the trachea (wind pipe).
CONGRATULATIONS to Nifemi, Jordyn and Sydney who answered correctly.

How fast is a sneeze?   Why do we sneeze?
Sneezing is a way of getting rid of something that is irritating the sensitive parts of the nose.  Sneezing helps stop dust or pollen from reaching our lungs.
The air shoots out of our nose at about 100 miles an hour!!!

The Health Trivia Questionthis month was" What are the largest and smallest bones in the human boday?

Two students ansered correctly.  Nifemi Fenwa, Room 6 and Sydney Palma Room 7.
In the middle part of your ear is a tiny bone called the stirrup.  It is only 0.12 inches long and weighs about 0.0001 ounce.  The largest bone is the thigh bone (femur).  It is also the strongest bone.  A man who is 6 feet tall will have a femur that is 1 1/2 feet long.

WINTER WALKING TIPS

Be more cautious now that it gets darker sooner.  Always assume that drivers CAN'T see you.  Wear bright colors and reflective clothing.  Remember to "sneak and peak" around snow banksand other parked cars.  If you can't see them, they can't see you.

Watch out for slippery sidewalks and streets. Any wet or darkened surface may be icy.  Wear boots and warm socks to keep your feet warm and balanced on the frozen surfaces.  Walk more slowly and with a wider gait than normal...walk like a penguin to keep more balanced.

Remember that it is COLD outside...wear a hat, scarf, mittens/gloves and dress in layers.

Healthy Holiday Tips

How do you get through the holidays without hassles???

" The kids are home from school, quietly wrapping the presents they bought at the school store for family members.  A fire is crackling in the fireplace and the smell of freshly baked cookies wafts through the holiday decorated house.  WHAT'S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?  Nothing at all if you're in a Hallmark Card.  The reality is more likely to be overstimulated and tired kids, unbaked holiday treats, presents yet to be purchased, the decorations still unpacked in the basement and a totally frazzled you!!"  (Children's Hospital of Philadelphia)

This year, try having holidays without hassles.  Plan a different approach including relaxation and enjoyment.

1.  Try NOT to do everything yourself.  Make a list of what others (especially the children) can do to help and encourage them to do it.  Remember it is ok if every cookie you make is not identically shaped.

2. Eat for Health.  Have an apple, small yogurt or other snack before going to a holiday party so you won't be starving and desire the goodies immediately upon arrival.  Many holiday recipes can be "lightened up" by making substitutions such as yogurt for sour cream, by using reduced fat dairy products or by using applesauce instead of oil when making brownies.

3.  Keep Moving.  Maintain your usual exercise routine.  The added stress and caloriesmean you need physical exercise even more.  Try (as if you had a choice) to park your cara distance away from the shopping mall entrance.

4.  Plan fun activities with the kids.  Plan activities not on the "to do" list, like going to a show, to a museum, or going ice skating.

5.  Emphasize what's important and the true meaning your family has for the holidays.

6.  Get plenty of rest.  Balance activities with rest periods.  Encourage all family members to get a good night's sleep every night so they are refreshed to enjoy all of the holiday festivities.

Happy healthy Holidays to everyone.....Mrs. Kaplan
